Leo Tolstoy and the power of now

leo-tolstoy-quoteI created an inspiration graphic from a Leo Tolstoy quote that is so obviously true and yet something I (and probably you) keep forgetting.

When I first read it in a book I jumped right out of my couch and started working on my project.

“There is only one time that is important: NOW! It is the most important time because it is the only time when we have any power.”  ~Leo Tolstoy

Now is the only time I can do something about my life. I can plan and fantasize about my future all I want, but I have no power over what will actually take place. Nor can I change what happened in my past.

The only thing I have power over is this moment. Nothing more, nothing less. There is absolutely no reason to wait for a better time.

Tolstoy’s quote is timely also because I’ve diligently practiced my mindfulness skills (Defuse from your thoughts) – mindful breathing and leaves on the stream – in the last weeks. I think I’m starting to get results. During the last two weeks I’ve felt more peaceful than usually and I’m not as entangled with the stories and sh*t that goes round and round in my head. I live more in the now and less in my past or in my thoughts about the possible future.

It’s difficult to put into words, but I think it’s real.

    I got a LOT of various stuff done today–just taking one minute at a time. In the past, I have thought about things that bothered me instead of just dealing with it. It definitely has a lot to do with great attitude. 😀

      I’m really happy with the results I’m getting form my leaves on stream etc exercises – the best result is that find it easier to focus on what I want to do. I’m not as easily hassled by my thoughts though I think I’m still pretty scatterbrained.. 🙂

    LOVE the quote and graphic Satu! LIving the past and future is one of my (many!) problems. I spend a lot of time regretting what COULD have been ‘if only’ (I’d done this or that) and dreaming of what my future could be like ‘if only’ (I’d be changed in this or that way!).

      Hi Deb! I suffer from the same problem, but the exercises seem to help. Next I’m going to learn how to deal with my emotions better.
