Wrapping up October

october-resolutions-corrNovember is here already and my happiness project continues. Here is something about how my October went.

The absolutely best resolution in October was “Challenge yourself”. As I mentioned in an earlier post, my challenge for October was to finish a professional project. I guess it’s not a coincidence that the resolution worked so well – if you set up a deadline, do some planning and start working, you’re bound to get results.  🙂 If I hadn’t done it, I think I would’ve continued to vaguely procrastinate on the project.

I was so happy with the outcome I set another professional deadline for myself for November.

I just wonder why it never occurred to me to set a deadline before. Duh!

treenivihkoAs for my resolution to Exercise smarter, I’ve done misc stuff. I started keeping a workout log again. It was easy to get enthusiastic about it when I gave myself a permission to buy a new notebook for the purpose. 🙂 I’ve tried keeping a workout log before but I didn’t stick to it for very long.

Also, I’ve read a lot about muscle imbalances and watched lots of YouTube videos on how to activate specific muscles and muscle groups. As you probably know, it’s quite easy to execute any exercise or movement by cheating, i.e. using the wrong muscles.

The only reason to complain is that I’m fed up with doing clams and bridges already… 🙂 I also meant to write more posts about the stuff I learned.

In order to learn to Defuse from my (stressful) thoughts I’ve experimented with several techniques. One of them is called Leaves on stream, which means that I practice putting my thoughts on leaves and let the stream carry them away. Rinse and repeat. Except because my thoughts are “too big” for leaves, I usually place them on trays that circulate on a conveyor belt. 🙂

As you can probably guess, I have placed lots of  “This is boring” and “I don’t know how to do it properly” thoughts on trays during the last weeks.

For some reason, I was very bad at trying new things (Try something new) in October, even though I compiled a list of new things I could try. The only thing I did was dancing on a dance machine at the local movie theater. As en experiment it was quite a flop. 🙂 For my first program I chose normal instead of easy, because I thought that dancing (super quick) salsa for 1,5 months has made me quick at my feet.


I’d also like to point out that my legs are quite short. The squares are just too far apart! 🙂

Well, pride goeth before fall. The machine’s verdict of my performance was short and to the point. “Failed”.

What it comes to my resolution to Get up and running first thing in the morning, I’ve been 50% successful. Lot’s of room for improvement there.


 All in all, for some reason my October was a bit of disappointment.

I’m not quite sure why. It may be because my resolutions weren’t as well chosen or because they weren’t a good match to each other. Or maybe I just bit more than I could swallow. Also, Gretchen Rubin used to work with one theme for a whole month (for example love, friendship, hobbies, parenthood ) and I think it might work better for me too.

I’ve decided I’m not going to set up new resolutions for November. I’ll keep practicing and consolidating my September and October resolutions instead. Beginning in December, I’m going to pick one theme per month and start working on it.

I hope that will give me a more satisfying experience.

    Hi Satu,
    I love those dance machines! My legs are also very short and I end up falling over for some reason. I like the reference to muscle imbalances. I am going to check out some info on that myself.

      Hi Linda! I wanted to try those dance machines because they they look fun. They are deceptive though because they are more difficult than they look. I’s a bit like doing very fast hopscotch.

      I’m thrilled to hear that one of my “distance pets” says hello in return! 😛

    I hope your conveyor belt doesn’t just go round and round in circles like the baggage carousel at the airport!

    I think you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself as it sounds like you did a bit in the month and don’t forget your work / professional project. I like the idea of less goals and a specific focus. I might look at something like that as I like the goal setting notion and having targets (perhaps just not about food / dieting!).

      Ha, I think the baggage carousel analogy might be even more usable than my conveyor belt. Unfortunately, it’s the same bags that tend to circulate on the belt all the time. I think I could start saying “Here’s the green backpack again!” or something like that… 🙂

      The one thing I’m trying to avoid is making my happiness project just another thing to satisfy my perfectionism.

    Hi Satu, I think you’ve come a long way. Really. I think that unmotivating times are the most important training for change because what do you do with them–move forward or give up? They are the game changer for most people. Too many people give up. But other people see value in what happened when they were less than optimal and build upon that. Just build on it. I don’t think that any one month of my life has stood out as awesome. All of my projects are very many months long. So keep going forward with enthusiasm. Contrary to the best selling books–nobody actually changes their habits in 30, 60, or 90 days. It takes longer than that. It takes more staying power than that. It takes a different perspective than that. My opinion–You’re doing great, just keep it up. 😀

      I felt briefly tempted to quit my happiness project but luckily I didn’t give in to it. If I were any younger than I am now I might be tempted to believe all those books that tell you to turn your life around in 90 days or something..

      Hi Lori! I love the expression “Dance like a dork”!! I tried the dance machine at 3 pm in the afternoon, so I’m pretty certain there weren’t any witnesses to my demise. 🙂
