Testing Omron Fitness Gadgets

Ready to start testing!

I received two new fitness gadgets from Omron on Tuesday.

Some weeks ago I applied to become a “test person” for Omron’s CaloriScan monitor in Finland.  I also  got to test Omron’s body composition monitor BF511.

So now I’m finally going to find out if I’m half made of fat. The photos taken during my grandmother’s funeral revealed that at least I’m extremely well fed!

Those of you who read this blog regularly may know that I’m a dedicated pedometer user. I’ve used an Omron pedometer for over two years and I and my pedometer  are practically inseparable.


The CaloriScan monitor is not a pedometer but a “Professional Weight Management Activity Monitor” *grin*. In addition to tracking daily steps, it supposedly calculates your daily calorie consumption more accurately than an ordinary pedometer does.

I set up and started using my CaloriScan monitor on Tuesday night. As of my writing this post – at 11pm – my monitor claim’s I’ve burned 2125 calories  and taken 5970 steps today (too few!). The monitor has a lot of other functions I need to familiarize myself with.

I haven’t used the body composition monitor yet. Because of migraine, my eating has been out of whack for a few days and I’m not in the mood for weighing myself right now. Maybe on Sunday. 🙂

    I love my Garmin watch for tracking mileage while running. The most recent purchase I’ve made was a foam roller. It’s not exactly high tech, but it adds a nice massage at the end of my runs.

    I belong to Weight Watcher’s Satu and they have recently introduced this new active link monitor that you wear almost all the time to calculate your physical activity. It sounds interesting, but of course on top of the price is a monthly fee in order to synch it with your computer.

    I’ll be curious to hear your review of the CaloriScan monitor.

      Hi Aimee!

      Do you like foamrolling? I use my foamroller only occasionally and mostly for foamrolling my back. I take the muscle kinks out of other part so my body doing self-trigger point massage with a super ball. 🙂

      CaloriScan is ok, but I think it probably overestimates the calories I actually burn. But I’ll write a longer review later.

        Satu I do like foam rolling. My roller came with a list of exercises so I follow that. I try to do it after I run and whenever I’m feeling particularly tight. I have never heard of a super ball. I’ll have to check that out.

        On Weight Watchers you are allowed to earn activity points and then basically eat those points as you see fit. I never use more than half of the earned points because I also think they are overestimated.

  2. Satu I have NO fitness gadgets. I used to have a Polar HRM and have previously downloaded the My Fitness Pal App on my iPhone, but at the moment I’m not using anything.

    Perhaps I need to change that.

      I’d love to have an iPhone! And I think I my phone would soon be full of all these (exercise and fitness) apps…

    Hi Satu! I really don’t have many fitness gadgets at all. I have one set of dumbbells, a yoga mat, and a yoga strap. I honestly like having less than more. But fitness books–that is another story….

    It will be interesting how your new stuff affects your fitness and eating. There is a guy at TOPS who claims that his 40 pound weight loss has so much to do with his arm gadget.

    I don’t have any gadgets now other than my bike computer. I have used a GoWear fit, which is fun, but in trimming expenses I got rid of that subscription.

    Hope your migraines are doing better!
